Hello! My name is Theresa Han and I am a student in the MIT program at Seattle University. I first realized that I wanted to be a teacher when I took a service-learning seminar at the University of Washington. In this program, participants had the option to pick a school or other similar organization in which they would tutor or otherwise assist children academically. For three months, I volunteered at Laurelhurst Elementary, a school in an upper middle class neighborhood. While working in this classroom filled with bright, successful kindergarten students, I learned how closely academic success was tied with family background.

After completing the seminar, I became involved with Jumpstart, a program that addresses the needs of the city’s most vulnerable children by placing energetic college students in low-income neighborhood preschools. Many of the students in Jumpstart speak English as a second language, and several of them lack the resources to build a foundation of learning at home. I helped these children gain a head start in school by teaching literacy though a number of set skills. After my time at Jumpstart, I became eager to help underserved children succeed in school and receive the best education possible.
